how it works

Interview photographers.
Interview at least one other photographer even if you were given a referral by someone. (This is because the photographer you've heard about might not be the right person for your specific requests - destination wedding, etc.)  This interview is called a consultation that occurs either in person or by phone and it helps to give you a feel for how each photographer conducts him/herself and their style of work.  You need to feel at ease with the photographer you choose because unlike other vendors, the photographer will be with you for as long as you want him or her around.  It is best to schedule an in-person consultation for this reason.  Some photographers charge a fee for this meeting.

Keep your consultation date and be on time.
Remember that the photographer is sizing you up as well to determine whether they would be comfortable entering into a contract with you.  Showing up on time sends the message that you are to be taken seriously.  Come prepared with questions and expect to be shown samples of their work.  You will be given a sample contract to review along with a checklist of photos you would like taken on the wedding day.  Bear in mind that if you request many formal shots of the bridal party and family members, this will extend the overall amount of time the photographer will need to work.  These types of posed shots are taken either before or directly following the ceremony, so you will have to plan for this.

Choose a photographer and sign the contract.
Do not choose a photographer simply based on price.  When you decide on a photographer, contact this person asap to be sure they're still available on your chosen date.  If they are, sign the contract right away.  You do not have a photographer booked until you have signed a contract.  At that time you will pay what is called a deposit or retainer fee (usually 50% of the total cost), with the balance due usually one month prior to the wedding.

That's how you get started!
